WORK ON CITY’S FIRST SEA TUNNEL TO START THIS YEAR

SHENZHEN will build its first sea tunnel as part of the Mawan Cross-Sea Passage. Construction on the 8.05-kilometer passage is slated to kick off within the year, according to a release by the Shenzhen transport commission over the weekend.

The passage, a road and tunnel project, will link Yueliangwan Boulevard in Qianhai and Dachan Bay Toll Gate of the Shenzhen-Guangzhou Riverside Expressway in Bao’an District.

The sea tunnel will extend 1.1 kilometers. The other sections of the passage include a 2.5-kilometer road in Qianhai and a 4.45-kilometer road in the Dachan Bay area.

The project aims to ease traffic on roads leading to port areas in Qianhai and improve the urban environment in the area.

Upon completion, the passage is mainly tasked with cargo traffic at Mawan, Chiwan and Shekou ports and some of the passenger traffic to the port areas. It is also being designed to improve the link between Bao’an Central Business District and Qianhai.

With a total investment of 11.5 billion yuan (US$1.8 billion), the project is expected to be completed in three years.

The commission said it was conducting a second round of reviews on the environmental impact of the project.

According to the commission, the project will cover 7 hectares of sea area and has a minimal impact on the coast.

Authorities have completed the bidding process, the winning company has started drafting designs, and related departments have submitted applications for sea construction, navigation safety compliance, and environmental impact approvals, the commission said.

Yueliangwan Boulevard is a major trunk road linking Qianhai — a 15-sq-km area adjacent to Nanshan District that’s slated for modern service industry development in cooperation with Hong Kong — with downtown Shenzhen through Shennan and Beihuan boulevards, and with Bao’an District through the Shenzhen-Guangzhou Riverside Expressway, Bao’an Boulevard and National Highway 107.

Dachan Bay port is situated in the center of Bao’an and adjacent to the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Cooperation Zone. About 20 nautical miles north of Hong Kong, 40 nautical miles south of Guangzhou, and 10 kilometers south of Shenzhen International Airport, it is a new international container terminal serving the Pan-Pearl River Delta cargo catchment areas.
