Passenger arrested for attacking taxi driver
    2018-07-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A TAXI passenger was detained by police Thursday for attacking a cabbie who asked him to fasten his seat belt on the early morning of July 9, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The taxi rider, identified as Zhao, didn’t fasten his seat belt after getting into a taxi. The taxi driver, surnamed Zhou, told Zhao to buckle up a couple of times after Zhao refused to do so. Zhao became irritated and allegedly beat up Zhou at around 3:30 a.m.

Zhou called the Nanhu Police Station in Luohu District after the attack and the police began investigating the case. The suspect was identified and busted Thursday, three days later.

Based on a forensic doctor’s examination, Zhou suffered from mild injuries. The police decided to detain Zhao for 15 days and fine him 1,000 yuan (US$149.48).

The police are currently looking into another suspect who is believed to have colluded with Zhao in the attack.

The traffic authority told the newspaper that the taxi company would seek legal support and ask for the attacker to compensate Zhou.

According to the traffic authority, this was not the first case of a driver attacked by a passenger who wouldn’t buckle up.

One day after the attack on Zhou, a bus driver from a travel agency was beaten by a passenger who wouldn’t cooperate and fasten his seat belt.

Relevant traffic rules in Shenzhen require drivers to ask their passengers to fasten their seat belts before departure. Drivers will be punished if their passengers don’t follow the rule.

A previous report said a taxi driver was fined 200 yuan by traffic police after one of his customers refused to buckle up despite having been told to a number of times.

However, many cabbies said the rule is unfair as some passengers refuse to follow the requirement. They also worry that they will get complaints and fines for urging passengers to fasten their seat belts against their will.

The traffic authority said in response that each taxi has a sign on the window to remind passengers to buckle up. The GPS devices installed in the taxis also prompt passengers to follow the rule, and the taxi drivers are required to reinforce the necessity of fastening seat belts before departure.

However, it is unreasonable to impose punishment on just the cabbies but not passengers who refuse to cooperate, according to the traffic authority. The public security department is urged to improve the rules to protect drivers’ rights. (Zhang Qian)
