A FERRARI driver who is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol hit a van carrying 10 people on Shennan Boulevard near Shahe East Road yesterday morning.

The van is suspected of being overloaded with passengers when the accident happened at 6 a.m. Police said on its official microblog shortly after the accident that one had been seriously injured.

By press time, Shenzhen police hadn’t given any further details, saying the case was still under investigation.

Some photos circulating online yesterday showed the Ferrari was seriously damaged. Some of the injured people were lying on the roadside.

Police statistics showed a total of 2,747 drivers were caught for driving under the influence of alcohol in the past month during the World Cup period.

Among them, 715 were arrested for drunk driving, 127 percent more than during the 2014 World Cup period.

On the early morning of July 11, a driver was caught parking on the roadside near an intersection in Shajing, Bao’an District, sleeping. Police woke up the driver surnamed Zeng and suspected he was seriously drunk. A test showed his blood alcohol content had reached 288mg/100ml, more than three times the limit of 80mg/100ml for illegal driving.

The investigation showed Zeng had drunk some red wine with friends. On his way home, he was involved in an accident, which he settled privately. As he felt tired, he parked the car on the roadside and slept.
