Teenager almost blinded by substandard contact lenses
    2018-07-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A 14-YEAR-OLD girl almost lost the sight in her left eye due to using a pair of shoddy contact lenses purchased online, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

The girl, identified as Fanfan, is a junior middle school student in Bao’an District. She became short-sighted three years ago but seldom wears glasses. This January, a friend of hers bought her a pair of contact lenses from an online shop.

Fanfan wore the lenses for seven or eight days in a row and forgot to take them out one night as she was very sleepy. Another time, she forgot to wash her hands before inserting them.

A week later, she began to have symptoms such as red eyes and lacrimation, but just bought some eyedrops at a drug store to ease the discomfort. However, she began experiencing sharp pain, photophobia and rapid decline in vision in her left eye.

Ling Shouliang, a doctor from the Shenzhen Aier Eye Hospital, said that the cornea of Fanfan’s left eye was very cloudy when she went to the hospital to seek treatment. After an examination, Fanfan was confirmed to have suffered from acanthamoeba keratitis, a very rare eye disease, in her left eye.

After a week of specific treatment, the inflammation in Fanfan’s left eye had been greatly reduced and her eyesight had improved as well. However, she still needs to undergo cornea transplant surgery, as the inflammation triggered a leucoma in her left eye, Ling said.

According to Ling, acanthamoeba keratitis is mostly caused by wearing contaminated contact lenses, which can lead to infection if improperly placed in the eye. He advised residents to purchase qualified contact lenses and to wear them in accordance with instructions. (Zhang Yu, Fu Xinyue)
