SUSTech enrollment

SOUTHERN University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) enrolled 1,000 new students for the school year 2018, most of whom are among the top 2 percent of science students in this year’s National College Entrance Examinations.

Official figures showed more than 32,000 students nationwide applied to study at the university, 20 percent more than in the previous year.

The university has enrolled 155 science students from Guangdong Province, among whom 111, or 72 percent, are from Shenzhen.

Phone smuggling

LUOHU Customs recently caught a middle-aged Hong Kong woman attempting to smuggle 50 reconditioned iPhones to Hong Kong in a baby stroller.

The woman was walking with a 10-year-old child when she was intercepted by officers at Luohu Checkpoint. An X-ray scan of the backpack hanging on the baby stroller showed it contained tightly packed products, which were later confirmed to be mobile phones. The woman claimed the phones were reconditioned in Huaqiangbei and would be sold in Hong Kong, but she couldn’t provide any receipts. The case is under investigation.

Alcohol test

A BLOOD test showed the alcohol content of a Ferrari car driver who was involved in an accident on Binhai Boulevard on Monday was 94.39 mg per 100 ml, which is above the legal limit of 80 mg per 100 ml, according to traffic police.

The 25-year-old driver, surnamed Lin, was carrying a passenger surnamed Huang when he hit a van at 6:20 a.m. The van was overloaded with passengers by two, and several of them were injured in the crash.
