A TEAM of 13 volunteers from IBM started a one-month project yesterday to help Shenzhen achieve its goal of becoming a child-friendly city.

The volunteers, coming from nine countries including the United States, Canada and Spain, are experts in the fields of cloud computing, data analysis and project management, among others.

A kick-off ceremony was held in Shenzhen yesterday. Six local charity institutions, including Shenzhen Children’s Welfare Association and Shenzhen Media Group Charity Foundation, will collaborate with the expatriate volunteers.

During the monthlong service, the volunteers, along with the local charity organizations, will help Shenzhen develop child-focused projects with their specialized knowledge in technology and project management.

Meanwhile, the volunteers will also take advantage of IBM’s edge in big data to help collect, analyze, screen and share charity projects for children around the globe.

The volunteers will also organize themed activities in local communities, including a sharing session of AI technologies for teenagers and a workshop on women’s leadership.

This batch of outstanding employees is the 41st volunteer team IBM has dispatched to help with such projects in China.

Lin Lebo, executive chief of Shenzhen Children’s Welfare Association, said Shenzhen is striving to develop itself into a child-friendly city, and one of the core projects is the construction of a comprehensive base for children’s development. He hopes the volunteers will use their knowledge of technologies to help Shenzhen achieve that.

Shenzhen Daily will follow the expatriate volunteer team’s work in Shenzhen.
