A review of ‘The Most Handsome Man in the World’
    2018-07-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

As a teenager, I always wonder what true love is. After reading a touching story, my eyes are moist and I think I may have found the answer.

The author’s grandfather who he called Papaw was a farmer. Every day, the author’s grandmother Mamaw would invariably iron Papaw’s work clothes which were rarely seen and would be filthy in just a short time. Asked why she repeated such pointless acts day after day, she elaborated that Papaw was the most handsome man God has ever made. She said he was her best friend and the love of her life.

She loved every chance she got to show him off and make the rest of the world jealous that he was hers. Her reply is the sweetest sentiment I have ever heard.

So later that day, the author looked closely at Papaw. He was a short, skinny man with a relatively big fanny compared with his shoulders. His hair was thin on top, and his false teeth didn’t line up well when he smiled. He wore horn-rimmed glasses that were too gigantic for his face because all he cared about was being able to see. The author most certainly didn’t see how anyone could consider Papaw as the most handsome man on earth.

But Mamaw giggled and gave the author a girlish smile, “You just aren’t looking in the right light. Those eye wrinkles haven’t always been there. He has the most beautiful blue eyes I have ever seen. They are exactly the same color as the sky just before the sun goes down. His entire face lights up when he smiles, and his voice is so calming and full that everyone in nine countries wants to hear him talk.”

She continued, “I want him to feel beautiful. I iron his clothes every day because for all these years, he has made me feel beautiful. He is a man worthy of respect. I want him to look the part every day. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

All of a sudden, it dawns on me profoundly what genuine and eternal love is. It is Mamaw ironing Papaw’s pants earnestly every day.

Personally, I think true love, which is a light that never dims, is trying to love just for the sake of love. The only present love demands is love. True love that warms more than a thousand fires keeps the cold out better than a cloak.

True love is like a butterfly. It goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes. Brief is life, but true love is lasting. The aspect may change, but not the essence. A heart that loves is always young and beautiful like Mamaw’s.

I wish for you to be happy. I hope when you seek your true love as a mature adult, you will meet “the most handsome man” or “the most gorgeous woman” in your mind who can make your heart smile and will age with you day by day.
