A FILIPINO engineer who died of a cerebral hemorrhage has been honored in China for donating organs to six recipients in Taizhou City in East China’s Jiangsu Province.

Abear Wilbert, 49, suffered a brain hemorrhage July 6 when he was driving in Wuxi City, said his wife under a pseudonym, Wang Fang.

The highway police found Wilbert lying unconscious in his car parked along the roadside and took him to the Taizhou People’s Hospital, where doctors performed two operations on him. He was declared brain dead about ten days later, said Xue Han, an ICU doctor at the hospital.

“When we married, we joked that should anything happen, we would donate the body and not waste it. I did not expect that he would be the one who left me,” said Wang.

Six people have received organs donated by Wilbert. The transplants were successful, though it generally takes about a year to tell whether the organs have been fully accepted, said Jiang Xinchun, a donation coordinator with Taizhou City Red Cross Society.

“The family’s decision is commendable and highly respected,” said Jiang.

Wilbert came to Guangdong Province in South China to work as an engineer 18 years ago. He settled in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, seven years ago and is survived by two children.  (Xinhua)
