Molesters detained by police
    2018-07-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A TOTAL of 29 men suspected of indecent behavior and violating the privacy of others on the Metro were detained by Shenzhen police in a monthlong special action that started June 22, the public transport sub-bureau of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau announced recently.

Based on the video provided by police, some molesters admitted that while in the carriage they would deliberately put their hands in low positions and wait for a female to come close. Also, during peak hours, the suspects would press into the crowd to illegally touch their victims.

According to the police officers handling the cases, the molesters aroused suspicions by taking the subway back and forth, waiting for an opportunity for the indecent behavior.

The plainclothes squad of Luohu District caught a suspect surnamed Tang on the spot during a patrol July 11 on Metro Line 3, after the suspect touched the hip of a victim. Tang confessed to his illegal act and was put under detention for five days.

Li Zhe with the public transport sub-bureau said that the cases were mostly found during peak hours in the mornings and evenings in crowded places like Metro platforms and carriages.

Most of the offenders are young and middle-aged men between 30 and 40, and they commit the crimes alone by touching the victims with their hands and bodies.

Wei Tingting, founder of the Guangzhou Gender Center, said that women should not take a passive attitude toward those offenses.

Wei suggested that if females are harassed in public places like on the bus, Metro and in parks, they should seek help from a passer-by. Evidence gathering is also important, Wei said.
