Former official probed

AI WENLI, former senior political adviser of North China’s Hebei Province, was investigated for suspected serious violations of Party disciplinary rules and law, according to the top anti-graft agency yesterday.

Ai, former vice chairman of the Hebei Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has turned himself in and been investigated by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the National Supervisory Commission, according to a statement by CCDI yesterday.

2 dead, 13 injured

TWO people died and 13 others were injured in a car accident that occurred at an intersection in downtown Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang Province, on Monday.

Witnesses said a black Mercedes-Benz driven by a female lost control at about 7 p.m. at the intersection of Jingzhou Road and Wen’erxi Road and plowed into a dozen pedestrians and cyclists. Several vehicles were also damaged.

32 punished

THIRTY-TWO people have been punished over a deadly road collapse that killed 11 in Guangdong Province on Feb. 7, the provincial work safety administration said Monday.

The collapse happened at a subway construction site in Foshan, killing 11 and injuring another eight. One person is still missing. Direct economic losses amounted to over 53.2 million yuan (US$7.9 million).

US$20.5b for needy

CHINA’S Ministry of Finance (MOF) said Monday it had injected 140 billion yuan (US$20.5 billion) into an allowance scheme to help needy families and individuals.
