Antibody detection may not be as advertised: experts
    2018-08-03  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A NUMBER of clinics and medical institutions launched antibody detection services after recent vaccine scandals. However, pediatricians point out that these services are not as “magical” or “omnipotent” as advertised, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported Thursday.

A woman surnamed Lu recently received an advertisement leaflet from a clinic, which claimed it had launched a new service that could conduct immunodetection from a blood sample. The range of detectable antibodies includes those of the measles virus, rubella virus, mumps virus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Clostridium tetani and rabies virus.

DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) is of greatest concern to most parents, but many of the city’s public hospitals don’t provide detection services for DPT antibodies, while they are often provided in private clinics.

One clinic said that the number of families that came for consultations and to order detection services has seen a significant increase recently. However, the detection of antibodies is limited and the detection range varies from clinic to clinic.

The waiting time for the results also varies. Some require two days while others may take up to 15 days. The price of the detection ranges from 8 yuan (US$1.17) to 50 yuan according to antibody species, but some medical institutions charge outrageous prices.

According to a medical institution that has connections in Hong Kong, a detection package that covers four antibodies is priced at HK$7,800 (US$994), as the blood sample will be sent to an authoritative assay office in the United States.

In response to these emerging services, many experts have stated that only a few kinds of vaccine antibodies, such as those for measles, rubella, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and chicken pox, can be detected at present.

Li Bo, a pediatrician with Shenzhen People’s Hospital, said as the antibody titer for the DPT vaccine is unable to directly reflect whether the patient has been effectively inoculated, it is unnecessary to test for the antibody. (Zhang Yu)
