SZ men most fashionable in country: report
    2018-08-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WITH the booming technology, fashion and tertiary industries, Shenzhen has claimed the unofficial title of “city of metrosexuals” in China, according to a news report by Hong Kong news outlet South China Morning Post.

In recent years, the consumption ability of men in Shenzhen has risen sharply. According to a report on male consumption released by JD Research Institute under JD.com, Shenzhen men have become one of the top three consumers in the country.

In addition, Shenzhen overtook Beijing last year to become men’s first choice for fashion consumption and had the largest male user group on VIP.com, a Chinese online luxury goods retailer, according to a consumption trend report.

The news report said many factors can be attributed to Shenzhen’s role as a fashionable city for men. First, as a port city similar to San Francisco and Amsterdam, Shenzhen is able to take in new talents and new ideas like a sponge.

Unlike other big cities that tend to maintain their local identity, Shenzhen considers itself a city of migrants and has inclusive demographics. Therefore, Shenzhen residents have a more progressive view on gender roles, especially regarding fashion consumption.

Another important reason is that the city has a young and potentially huge consumer market. Young Chinese men, especially the high-income technicians in Shenzhen, are paying more attention to fashion and appearance.

The consumption trend report showed that male residents in Shenzhen not only shop for themselves, but also for their spouses or girlfriends.
