“The Pearl” is a splendid novel written by John Steinbeck.

The story begins with a couple struggling at rock bottom. Their only child Juan was stung by a scorpion. Aiming to pay for the immense medical expenses, they went to a river, expecting a miracle. Then fortune did pour down and a rare pearl was spotted by them. From then on, everything was placed on the pearl. In the end, the fantasy ended and the pearl was thrown into the river.

There are many interpretations of this story, mainly about fate and human nature. From the beginning to the end, the couple tries to fight against fate — they have an indomitable spirit. The story ends with the wife’s cry and her husband’s violent revenge. Fate can be cruel to those living at the bottom.

As the beginning of this story goes, in the city, people tell the story of the big pearl about how it was found and how it was lost. The same story has been repeated, only good and bad things, black and white things, kind and evil things and there are no mediocre things anywhere.

All in all, human beings are doomed to race against fate throughout their lives.
