13 adopted stray dogs poisoned at estate
    2018-08-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A WOMAN living in the Daya Bay area claimed that 13 stray dogs she had adopted were poisoned to death recently, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported Monday.

The woman identified as Li lives in an apartment in the Daya Bay area where she had been keeping 15 adopted stray dogs. Li said that her dogs were poisoned to death by someone July 20.

According to the Daily report, although the corridor in front of Li’s apartment had been cleaned up, claw marks and dog hair were left at the scene, and a strong unpleasant smell was still hanging in the air several days after the dogs had been found dead.

Li said someone had placed meat laced with a poisonous drug on the balcony and staircase in front of her apartment. Nine of her dogs were found dead that afternoon.

The woman found the lock of her apartment door had been damaged, and when she returned home after buying a new lock, another four of her dogs were found dead, leaving only two alive.

However, a manager from the property management company of the housing estate said the company had not placed any poison there for the dogs, and they also checked a surveillance video, but could not identify a suspect.

A staffer from the company said that Li had been keeping stray dogs for many years and she even owned more than 30 dogs at one time, causing many neighbors to complain.

The manager added that Li kept the dogs on the staircase, which caused many inconveniences to the neighbors. Some children did not even dare to use the stairs because of the dogs.

Another complaint concerned the time that Li would feed the dogs. Every day the woman would feed the dogs at around one o’clock in the morning, and the feeding would last for 30 minutes or an hour.

Some residents living in the housing estate said that they were not against raising dogs, but that pet owners must keep the environment clean at the same time. Many said they were angry that the dogs had been poisoned.

Li said she did not dare to leave her two remaining dogs unattended in case of another poisoning.

A lawyer suggested that Li report the incident to the police as soon as possible. (Zhang Qian)
