A PACKAGE of measures and actions will be implemented in the coming months to reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities.

The measures include tightened checks over different types of vehicles, especially heavy vehicles, tourism buses, school buses, vehicles carrying dangerous chemicals, and dump trucks.

Actions will be launched against illegal passenger services, overloading, fatigued driving, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Regarding illegal e-bikes and motorcycles, police will organize at least one special action each week to tackle such violations, according to a news conference yesterday.

Between January and July, 168 people were killed in traffic accidents in the city, a drop of 12.5 percent. The number of injuries dropped by 22.7 percent to 409, police statistics showed.

Most of the fatal accidents happened during three periods, between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

A total of 12 people were killed on National Highway 107 between January and July, double the number in the same period last year.

The number of fatalities involving cars dropped by 28 percent to 76 percent, while the number of deaths involving e-bikes or motorcycles increased by 40 percent to 77 percent between January and July, compared to the same period last year.

Regarding fatal accidents involving trucks, most occurred in Longgang and Bao’an districts.

A total of 40 e-bike riders and passengers, 21 pedestrians and bikers, and 23 car drivers and passengers, were killed in truck-related accidents.

Fatigued driving, slow driving, and illegally parking on expressways and fast roads, were blamed for the accidents, according to police.
