City ranked 2nd in waste classification
    2018-08-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN scored the second most points among 46 cities in the country regarding the classification of household garbage in the second quarter of 2018, according to a report released by the Housing and Urban-rural Development Ministry, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported Tuesday.

The assessment is divided into eight categories, including mechanism construction, demonstration area construction, facility construction, waste classification, organization and mobilization, education on waste classification, public institutions and publicity.

Shenzhen received the highest scores in mechanism construction, waste classification and publicity work. Additionally, the city got the second-highest scores in facility construction, education on waste classification, and public institutions.

As one of the first eight cities in the country to pilot household garbage classification, Shenzhen was also commended by the ministry for mobilizing more than 7,800 Party members and volunteers to instruct residents on how to classify household garbage.

According to the report, all 46 cities have announced the implementation of a scheme for household garbage classification. The cities, except for Tianjin and Qingdao, have also established a co-ordinated mechanism for waste classification at the municipal and district levels.

Additionally, 36 cities have included household garbage in local regulations or local legislative plans, and 38 cities have included waste classification in Party building work at the grassroots level.

After years of exploration and practice, Shenzhen has developed a comprehensive garbage collection and disposal system. Green waste, fruit and vegetable residue, and kitchen waste are categorized for special treatment, while other waste, such as glass, metal, plastics and paper, is classified according to its recycling properties.

In 2015, the city designated Saturday as “Resource Recycling Day,” and has since installed 5,913 waste classification facilities in 3,478 residential estates and urban villages.

In the first half of 2018, through the establishment of centralized garbage disposal points and regular supervision by volunteers, the participation rate of residents and accuracy of waste classification has reached over 80 percent.

According to statistics, the daily disposal volume of household garbage in Shenzhen reached 1,985 tons last year.
