Children practice Chinese painting in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday, to mark the country’s first National Chinese Immigration Day, which falls on tomorrow. The Brazilian Government in June officially recognized Aug. 15 as National Chinese Immigration Day to honor the contributions of Chinese to the country. Chinese laborers were first brought to Brazil in the early 19th century to work on local tea plantations. A secondary wave of people from China began settling in the city of Sao Paulo around the turn of the 20th century. Official records show the first group of people from China arrived in the country Aug. 15, 1900.Xinhua |
