15 SZ ATHLETES TO COMPETE AT ASIAN GAMES
    2018-08-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

FIFTEEN athletes from Shenzhen will compete at the 18th Asian Games to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, between Aug. 18 and Sept. 2.

They will compete in 15 events across 10 sports.

The athletes include synchronized swimmers Wang Liuyi and Wang Qinyi, track man Liang Jinsheng, and swimmers Ma Tianchi, Yu Liyan and Lao Lihui, as well as Lin Gaoyuan in table tennis, Zhang Xinqiu in shooting, Liang Meiyu in hockey and Chen Peina in windsurfing, sources from the city’s sports administration said.

Among the athletes, Chen Peina was the silver medalist in the women’s RS:X sailing race at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.

The 23-year-old Lin Gaoyuan will participate in three table tennis events including the men’s group, men’s singles and mixed doubles.

“I feel a great pressure and need to adjust myself, and I believe I can make a breakthrough in the men’s singles if I can adjust myself well,” said Lin, the 2017 Asian Cup champion, in an interview with Shenzhen Evening News.

Lin was a member of the Chinese teams that took the gold medals at the 2018 Team World Cup and 2018 World Team Championships.

Shenzhen athletes also have a strong chance to win gold medals in synchronized swimming, 100-meter sprint and 4x100 relay, 4x100 freestyle swimming relay and 4x200 freestyle swimming relay.

China will send a delegation of 845 athletes to participate in 375 events in 38 sports and disciplines.

A total of 11,300 athletes from 45 National Olympic Committees will compete in the Asian Games, according to the latest data from the Olympic Council of Asia.

The 2018 Asian Games, officially known as the 18th Asian Games, and also known as Jakarta Palembang 2018, is a pan-Asian multi-sport event to be held in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

For the first time, the Asian Games are being co-hosted by two cities; the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, which is hosting the Games for the first time since 1962, and Palembang, capital of South Sumatra province.

Events will be held in and around the two cities, including venues in Bandung, the province of West Java, and Banten. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Games will be held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.

Also for the first time, eSports and canoe polo will be contested as demonstration sports. eSports will be a medal event at the 2022 Asian Games.
