HK employee supports cancellation of job permit
    2018-08-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A 42-YEAR-OLD Hong Kong resident who has been working in Qianhai since 2015 is in favor of a new policy that allows Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents to work in mainland cities without job permits.

The Hong Konger, surnamed Lee, was the first Hong Kong staffer employed at his current company in Qianhai.

Lee recalled that there were a series of problems during the hiring process. He was required to apply for an employment permit before he could apply for social security.

To get the work permit, Lee had to ask for leave twice and spent a week on a physical examination. The certificate is only valid for two years, and he would need to reapply for a new permit if he changed jobs. Li has already applied for the certificate twice since being employed in Qianhai.

In March, the Qianhai authority announced that Hong Kong and Macao residents would no longer need permits to work in Qianhai. To provide convenience for Hong Kong and Macao residents seeking jobs in Qianhai, work permits are no longer necessary for the application of social security and individual tax subsidies for overseas talents.

Lee was delighted to hear the news, saying it could save him trouble as well as enhance Hong Kong residents’ sense of national identity.

Recently, the favorable policy was extended to the entire country according to a regulation released by the State Council, which is believed to strengthen the willingness of Hong Kong residents to work for mainland enterprises, said Lee.

During his years commuting between Hong Kong and mainland cities, Lee has experienced an increasing number of convenient measures for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents. For instance, he can use the Mainland Travel Permit to purchase tickets at vending machines at railway stations instead of lining up at the counters.

This year, Qianhai has released another regulation allowing Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents to enjoy the same treatment as mainland residents in paying and withdrawing from the housing provident fund, which further enhances Lee’s sense of benefit.

Currently, Lee lives in Qianhai from Monday to Thursday and goes back to Hong Kong on weekends. According to him, a promising career path as well as a friendly living and working environment will motivate him to stay in Qianhai.
