SENIOR OFFICIALS PUNISHED OVER VACCINE SCANDAL
    2018-08-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

JIN YUHUI, vice governor of Jilin Province, was removed from his post Thursday after revelations of misconduct by a Jilin-based producer of vaccines  triggered a public outcry.

The announcement was made at a meeting held by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPC and presided by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, on Thursday.

More than 40 government officials, including seven at the provincial level, have been held accountable for their neglect of duty or misconduct in oversight over the substandard vaccines at Changchun Changsheng Bio-tech Co., according to the meeting. Three senior officials were ordered to resign, including Li Jinxiu, vice chairman of Jilin’s top advisory body who was vice governor from December 2015 to April 2017, Changchun Mayor Liu Changlong, and Bi Jingquan, Party chief and vice head of the State Administration for Market Regulation.

The Jinlin Provincial CPC Committee and Government as well as the State Food and Drug Administration are demanded to write self-reflection reports to the CPC Central Committee and State Council, according to the meeting.

At the meeting, the CPC leaders heard a report on the investigation into the case of illegal production of vaccines by  Changchun Changsheng that has become a national scandal.

The leaders stressed the importance of safeguarding drug safety and vowed severe punishment for violations.

The meeting also called for improving long-term oversight mechanisms for vaccine production, firmly upholding the bottom line of public safety, and safeguarding people’s health.

Investigators found the company had violated rules on production management and national drug standards for the vaccines starting as early as April 2014.

Meanwhile, health authorities will revaccinate more children who used substandard DPT vaccines, the National Health Commission said Wednesday.

Two batches of DPT vaccines produced by Changchun Changsheng were found to be “unqualified.”

DPT refers to a combination of vaccines against three infectious diseases: diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus.
