Woman jailed for defrauding people out of millions of yuan
    2018-08-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A WOMAN in her 20s has been sentenced to 10 years and six months in jail for fraud, according to Shenzhen People’s Procuratorate on Wednesday. She was also fined 100,000 yuan (US$14,642).

The woman surnamed Tian claimed to be from a powerful family. She said she was the daughter of a provincial government official who once worked as secretary to a State leader. She claimed her mother was a businesswoman who now lives in New Zealand, and her uncle and cousin were both in the property development business.

Many people were convinced of Tian’s claims by the expensive clothes, fancy Porsche car, extravagant parties and luxurious lifestyle she shared on her WeChat Moments.

Occasionally, Tian would invite some of the friends on her WeChat over for dinner at an apartment in an upmarket Nanshan District housing estate and tell them that she would like to start her career in Shenzhen because she favored the environment and climate here.

One year after making her acquaintance, Tian told Ah Yin, one of her WeChat friends, that she could purchase 40 million yuan worth of steel for an airport project by paying only 20 million yuan through one of her father’s connections. Tian promised to pay Ah Yin’s investment back within three months along with 20 percent as the return. Ah Yin gave her 1 million yuan. Three months later, Tian offered Ah Yin a bigger project with a 100-percent return. Out of trust, Ah Yin transferred Tian another 5 million yuan. Tian asked Ah Yin to keep the deal confidential as it involved officials.

Six months later, Tian gave 550,000 yuan back to Ah Yin, saying the rest of the money was still in an overseas account. Later, Tian changed her story and said the money was being held by her cousin, and finally lied to say her father had passed away and her mother and uncle who were being held had the money.

Tian used the same tricks to swindle several people out of millions of yuan.

A police investigation showed that Tian’s father was actually a grass-roots official and her mother was laid off.

Tian had squandered millions of yuan on a luxurious lifestyle.
