Fight against polluted rivers ramped up
    2018-08-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CONTRACTORS tasked with the seven major water treatment projects in Bao’an have promised to meet the target of eliminating black and smelly water from all 64 rivers across the district by the end of the year, according to the district’s river treatment command center. The companies signed letters of responsibility with the center Aug. 2, vowing to finish the projects by Nov. 30.

The seven projects cover three major areas — the Maozhou River’s Bao’an section, the Great Airport Area and the Qianhai Tieshi area — which have the worst-polluted rivers in Bao’an.

Under the projects, 964 kilometers of sewage pipelines will be built, 33 river courses improved, 2,650 drainage systems in communities renovated, and 216.4 million cubic meters of river areas dredged, by Nov. 30.

Bao’an has vowed to clean up the water in 64 rivers, 200 drainage culverts and 71 lakes by the end of next year.(SD News)

plan released by the district’s river treatment command center in July.

According to the plan, the comprehensive treatment of the Maozhou River’s Bao’an section, and rivers in the Great Airport Port area and Qianhai Tieshi area, is expected to be finished by June 30 next year, and the water quality of the rivers will reach the national standard for landscape water by Dec. 31, 2019.

The 41.6-kilometer Maozhou River, Shenzhen’s longest river, is said to be one of the most polluted rivers in the Pearl River Delta Region, and ranks at the bottom of a national water quality scale.

The river runs through Bao’an District and Guangming New Area in Shenzhen, as well as Chang’an Township in Dongguan, where a growing number of labor-intensive industries and migrant workers contribute to water quality degradation. The river’s drainage basin is home to about 3 million people.(SD News)
