A MAN has been criminally detained for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a three-car accident near a car maintenance shop in Longgang District recently. The video provided by traffic police showed an SUV lose control, dart onto a pedestrian street and hit three cars parked outside the maintenance shop. The driver, surnamed Zhang, got out of the car and attempted to flee the scene. But he couldn’t walk well and was intercepted by onlookers. A test showed Zhang’s blood alcohol content had reached 202 mg per 100 ml, well above the legal limit of 80 mg per 100 ml for drunk driving. In a separate development, 30 drivers in Shenzhen are among 289 motorists provincewide who have been banned from driving for life since January this year. Guangdong will launch a three-month action on road safety, according to a news conference over the weekend. To ensure road safety, the city’s transport commission revealed a draft plan that offers awards of up to 60,000 yuan (US$8,759) to encourage the public to report work-safety perils in the transportation industry. The commission is seeking suggestions on the draft plan. Work safety incidents refer to violations such as speeding, overloading, using a phone while driving and failing to fasten safety belts while driving business vehicles. They also include driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, illegally changing lanes, picking up or dropping off passengers on expressways, modifying operation devices and deleting GPS data, according to the commission. Driving without a permit, or with an invalid permit, to engage in cargo and passenger transportation business is also included. A whistleblower reporting minor work safety perils can receive a 500-yuan reward for one clue or a maximum of 2,000 yuan within a month. For providing major work safety clues, a whistleblower can get a 3,000 yuan reward. For reporting those who have altered the number of deaths in a traffic accident, a whistleblower can receive 30,000 yuan per head count. For reporting major accidents, the reward will be raised to 40,000 yuan, or even 60,000 yuan, per head count. The maximum granted is 300,000 yuan. (Han Ximin) |
