AFTER a three-hour competition, featuring speeches and a Q&A section, five local teachers stood out from the 11 finalists to win this year’s “Teachers of the Year” title Friday.

The “Teachers of the Year” competition has been held annually since 2015. Following last year’s rules, this year’s five winners are teachers at local primary and secondary schools.

The 11 finalists were selected from thousands of candidates from all public schools in Shenzhen over the past few months. Three sections were organized for the final competition Friday where the finalists showcased their knowledge of education and methods of teaching.

A judging panel consisting of experts, representatives of teachers, students, media and residents was formed to vote in the final competition. Five teachers from Longgang, Futian, Luohu, Nanshan and Yantian districts won the titles. Each of the winners has been awarded a 100,000-yuan (US$14,641) prize.

Zhao Cha from Longgang Experimental School of Shenzhen is one of the “Teachers of the Year.” He currently teaches Chinese and has won many awards for his diverse and interesting methods of teaching.

In 2015, Zhao established a studio in Longgang District to do research on more appealing ways of teaching Chinese, and has since encouraged more teachers to explore the field.

A psychological counselor at Yantian Senior High School named Lin Ying is another winner. She has been focused on the psychological health of students over the past few decades.

Lin wrote a book on strengthening mental health among students in 2004 and, five years later, she helped the school get elected to trial a program for improving student mental health. Her contributions in the field convinced the judging panel to award her the title.

The three other recognized teachers are Tu Xin from Meiyuan Primary School in Futian District, Luo Lujing from Guiyuan Middle School in Luohu District and Xiao Yonghe from Shenzhen Bolun Vocational and Technical School in Nanshan District.

According to the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, the five “Teachers of the Year” will be giving speeches on their experiences and knowledge of teaching for their fellow teachers on Teachers’ Day on Sept. 10 as well as in the following months.
