Citywide parking map available by year-end
    2018-09-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A CITYWIDE online map of parking information might be available to the public by the end of this year, providing real-time parking information across the city, the Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday.

Parking has become a problem for drivers in the city as the number of vehicles soared sharply in recent years. Official figures showed that there are more than 3 million vehicles registered in the city, but there are only fewer than 2 million parking spaces citywide.

To solve the parking problem in Shenzhen, the city government is working on a online smart parking system by applying high technology like big data to provide better public parking services.

Multiple government departments, including the development and reform commission, jointly released a document on enhancing parking facilities last September that urged the invention of an integrated online cloud platform to assist motorists with parking in Shenzhen.

So far, the roadside parking system, “Yitingche,” has been installed in most regions of the city. In particular, the parking system has been functioning steadily in areas within the former special economic zone, namely Luohu, Futian, Nanshan and Yantian districts.

As for regions outside of the former special economic zone, the city’s transport commission is now installing facilities and the system will gradually cover all of Shenzhen.

Regarding commercial parking lots, the traffic police bureau has been working with navigation and parking system companies to develop a joint platform that monitors parking management and services.

Currently, over 1,500 for-profit parking lots have been included in the online parking monitoring system.

A proposal for developing a smart city map featuring parking information was put forward in January at the city’s annual plan on smart city construction and was included as one of the 50 major projects. Government departments responsible for the project have been carrying out preparatory work since then, the report said.

The next step is to integrate all of the online parking systems created by various departments so that a comprehensive parking map can be developed, according to the report.
