SZU ENROLLS RECORD NUMBER OF INTL. DEGREE STUDENTS
    2018-09-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE number of international students enrolled in degree programs at Shenzhen University (SZU) this year has set a new record, the university said Thursday.

Unlike language or exchange students who mostly study at the university for one or two semesters to learn Chinese, international degree students are those who study in the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programs.

“We have enrolled more than 200 degree students from overseas this year,” Dong Guomin, dean of the College of International Exchange, told Shenzhen Daily yesterday at the college’s opening ceremony to welcome newcomers.

In particular, the university has sent out offers to 48 doctoral students and 28 master’s students.

Most of the Ph.D. students are enrolled in programs at the university’s medical school.

According to the dean, compared to previous years, more international degree students are coming from countries and regions along the Belt & Road Initiative, such as Pakistan, Turkey and Russia.

“We had more students coming from Asian countries like Japan and South Korea over the past few years, but now we are receiving students from a more diverse background,” said the dean.

International students studying for bachelor’s degrees are mainly enrolled in three majors, namely the English-taught programs of international business, economic management and Chinese studies.

Including language and exchange students, the university now had over 800 registered international students as of Thursday. More students are coming to register in the following days, said the dean. However, the number of all types of international students topped that in 2015 with more than 900 registered students.

According to the dean, it is the first year the College of International Exchange has been responsible for enrolling international degree students apart from language and exchange students. In previous years, the college only took charge of overseas students who joined the language or exchange programs.

Although the new setting provides more convenience for management and services for international students, the college is facing difficulties in accommodating all overseas students due to the overall expansion in the number of students. The dean hopes that the university can provide more facilities for international students.

Li Qingquan, president of the university, gave an exclusive interview with the Shenzhen Daily this July, sharing the university’s path to becoming an internationalized higher education institution over the past 35 years.

Li said that since the 1980s, SZU has actively sought international academic exchanges and cooperations with institutions from around the globe. Starting out with just a few academic institutions, the university has now established cooperative relationships with 223 universities and colleges from all around the world.

A grand ceremony was held Wednesday night on the university’s main campus to celebrate the university’s 35th anniversary, with over 10,000 students and teaching faculty members in attendance.
