Should parents edit their baby’s genes?
    2018-09-19  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

I don’t support parents editing their baby’s genes. First of all, editing genes is a decision made only by parents without their child’s agreement. This would violate the freedom and the rights of those unborn children.

What’s worse, if only the rich could afford it, editing genes would be really unfair. The technology enables the rich to change their baby’s appearance and even their intelligence, while ordinary people can’t. As a result, people born into rich families have better conditions to compete in the society than others, even if they don’t work hard. It’s also bad for the country’s development because rich families will become richer while the poor will become poorer.

Most importantly, the diversity of human characters may be destroyed by this technology. In my opinion, no matter if you are a boy or a girl, rich or poor, talented or ordinary, beautiful or ugly, you are the only one of you and completely unique in the world. No one can replace you. However, this situation may change if parents can edit their baby’s genes. All the people may become both intelligent and beautiful, just like the same person. I can’t imagine how terrible that world would be.

In conclusion, this technology sounds fascinating, but has hidden dangers indeed. As far as I’m concerned, parents should tell their children that only by hard work can they become better, instead of editing their genes. Science and technology ought to help humans instead of changing humans.
