Eatery fined ¥30,000 for letting diners smoke
    2018-09-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

AN eatery in Songgang District was recently fined 30,000 yuan (US$4,379) for failing to implement an anti-smoking regulation, marking the subdistrict’s first such penalty.

The unidentified eatery in Songtao Community was punished for allowing its patrons to smoke in the restaurant, violating the regulation forbidding smoking in public venues, which went into effect citywide March 1, 2014.

When law enforcement officers visited the eatery recently, they caught one diner smoking while having his afternoon tea, and no staff of the restaurant ever tried to stop him from smoking the cigarette.

This is the second time in the past few months that the restaurant has been caught allowing its customers to smoke, according to the Songgang authority. Two diners in the restaurant were caught smoking during an anti-smoking inspection in the subdistrict in May. Ashtrays with cigarette butts were also seen on each dining table in the restaurant, and none of the restaurant staff ever tried to get the diners to quit smoking inside the restaurant, said a law enforcement officer.

The law enforcers in May issued a warning to the business and required it to rectify the practices within a designated period of time. But smoking was still seen in the restaurant.

A manager of the restaurant said that most of their customers are frequent patrons who have lived in the community for generations. “We are afraid of losing business if we don’t allow them to smoke in the restaurant,” said the manager.

Further efforts are still needed to stem public smoking in some small restaurants and wet markets. (SD News)
