IN the name of the Shenzhen University alumni team at Tencent, four founders of the Shenzhen-based Internet giant, namely Pony Ma, Zhang Zhidong, Chen Yidan and Xu Chenye, jointly donated 350 million yuan (US$51 million) to the university Friday to mark their alma mater’s 35th anniversary.

In particular, Ma, chairman of the board and CEO of Tencent, donated 200 million yuan, while the other three co-founders each donated 50 million yuan.

At the donation ceremony Friday at Shenzhen University, Li Qingquan, president of the university, presented a letter to Chen appointing him as the first honorary president of Shenzhen University’s Education Development Foundation.

The university will use the donation as the initial capital for setting up a special fund for talents, according to the university authority. The fund will mainly be used to invite guest professors to give lectures at the university, as well as to sponsor students to study at top universities around the world.

Representing the other founders at the ceremony, Chen addressed their hope that the donation would stimulate the passion among other alumni for the university, thereby helping it cultivate better local talents.

Professor Liu Hongyi, Party chief of the university, expressed gratitude to the Tencent founders on behalf of Shenzhen University at the donation ceremony.

The four founders each enrolled at the university in 1989. The company’s alumni team has been giving back to Shenzhen University for a decade. In 2008, the alumni team donated 10 million yuan, and it made a joint donation of 30 million yuan with Tencent Foundation in 2013.
