Deceased MPC deputy donated body
    2018-09-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A DEPUTY of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress, Zhou Mingming, passed away over the weekend from cancer at the age of 36. His wife and daughter donated his body to fulfill Zhou’s wish of giving back to society, local Chinese-language media reported yesterday.

Zhou had been known among local lawmakers for his devotion to enhancing public wellbeings, the Shenzhen Evening News reported.

A memorial service was held yesterday to honor Zhou’s efforts to improve various aspects of people’s lives, including preschool education, funeral reform, traffic management, water pollution treatment, disaster relief and light pollution.

During his service a lawmaker, Zhou conducted many researches on the problems affecting residents’ lives and provided a lot of helpful advice to the city government.

Before being elected as a deputy in Futian District, Zhou had worked as an engineer at a company in the district. He was the youngest deputy to the MPC in Shenzhen at that time.

In less than a week after he was elected a deputy in June 2010, Zhou started to conduct research with four other deputies at several kindergartens to learn about parents’ complaints against the rising tuition fees.

The deputies met with officials of the city’s education bureau after collecting opinions on the kindergarten tuition fees, which paved the way for Shenzhen’s new policies to financially support kindergartens and reduce tuition fees.

In September 2013, Zhou engaged in reconciliation work to resolve conflicts between a school in Futian District and buildings around the school that caused serious light pollution. Since then, he had devoted himself to research on urban color and light pollution. Zhou left his job to start his own company that focused on urban color.

He was also engaged in other social issues during his two terms of service at the MPC.

Originally from Hunan Pro-vince, Zhou was elected a deputy to represent the migrant workers’ group. After Zhou was diagnosed with cancer, his family spent almost all of their savings on his treatment.

Several deputies organized two fund-raising campaigns for Zhou while he was alive, but he wasn’t able to make it. Zhou was survived by his wife and 7-year-old daughter. (Zhang Qian)
