Man detained for fraud over vaccination appointments
    2018-09-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN was recently arrested by police at a building in Futian District for allegedly swindling more than 10 women with fake appointments for HPV vaccinations at a Hong Kong hospital, SZTV reported.

One of the victims surnamed Guo was cheated out of 5,000 yuan (US$727) by the man, identified as Jiang, in May. Jiang was one of her former colleagues and said he could help her arrange a genuine nine-valent HPV vaccination.

A large number of residents have made appointments to get HPV vaccines in Shenzhen, prolonging the waiting time for getting inoculated in the city. In addition, Jiang coaxed Guo to pay him as early as possible, claiming the price of the vaccine would rise in the next month. Guo was convinced by the suspect and paid him 5,000 yuan as a deposit.

According to a text message received by Guo, her appointment to get the HPV vaccine at Union Hospital in Hong Kong ad been arranged. The first appointment was scheduled for this August, while the following two were arranged for around Christmas and in March.

When Guo contacted Jiang the day before the first vaccination appointment to find out the exact time and address, the man was nowhere to be found. It was then that Guo realized she might have been swindled and called the police in Bao’an District.

The police stepped in and detained Jiang at an office building in Futian District earlier this month. It turned out that Jiang was an employee at a company that helped arrange HPV vaccinations in Hong Kong for mainlanders. However, the company had gone defunct in June as it could hardly make a profit due to the rising price of the vaccines in Hong Kong.

Although the owner of the company returned the customers’ money to the agents, including Guo’s, the man did not give the money back to his clients. According to the police, Jiang had swindled his victims for more than 80,000 yuan.

The police remind residents to be cautious when signing contracts with agencies and to always keep a copy of the contracts or receipts as evidence.

Since Sept. 7, Shenzhen residents can make appointments to get nine-valet HPV vaccines in the city. It costs nearly 4,000 yuan to get all three vaccinations, according to the report. (Zhang Qian)
