Man executed

A MAN convicted of killing nine middle school students in a knife attack was executed Thursday in Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, a local court said.

Zhao Zewei’s death sentence had been reviewed and approved by the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), the country’s top court, according to the Yulin Intermediate People’s Court.

The SPC said Zhao should be punished according to the law as his motive was abhorrent and highly vicious, and his brutal crime caused severe consequences and social influence.

Facial recognition

DIDI Chuxing, the largest ride-hailing company in China, said that from Sept. 27, drivers will receive random facial recognition checks between orders in addition to the routine pre-service daily facial recognition checks. Only those who pass the check can continue to take orders.

The company also said its customer service department has formed a special group to assist law enforcement agencies so that the police can get the information they want more efficiently when disputes happen.

Cross-border payment

WECHAT Pay, the mobile payment platform under Internet giant Tencent, will launch in October a cross-border payment service for its Hong Kong users traveling on the Chinese mainland.

With the new service, Hong Kong WeChat users on the mainland will be able to pay for high-speed railway tickets, book taxis and buy food using the app’s payment service, according to a press release from Tencent.

WeChat Pay will automatically convert Hong Kong dollars into RMB yuan for Hong Kong users, it said.
