The dance drama “Winter of Peacock” choreographed and directed by famous Chinese choreographer and dancer Yang Liping will be staged at Shenzhen Poly Theater next month. Different from her previous stage depictions of lively peacocks, the peacock played by Yang in this drama struggles for survival when it is about to die. The stage image Yang has pursued and built has always been that of a peacock. From “Peacock Princess” to “Spirit of Peacock,” Yang always depicts the bird’s vitality and nobility. “Winter of Peacock” is a chapter of her dance series, which depicts the four seasons of the peacock. Debuted in 2016, “Winter of Peacock” shows only the winter season, looking deeply into metempsychosis, or the transformation of life at death into another form of life. Hailing from Yunnan Province, Yang directed and choreographed a trilogy containing “Dynamic Yunnan,” “Echoes of Shangri-La” and “Tibetan Myth” between 2004 and 2008. In 2004, “Dynamic Yunnan” won five major awards at the National Lotus Awards. To create the exotic song and dance spectacular “Dynamic Yunnan,” Yang spent years traveling to remote villages of ethnic minority tribes in Yunnan and selected over 60 farmers for the show.
