Note: This phrase, widely used in the United Kingdom, means someone or something is much better or more advanced than their competitors. It seems to have its origin in the late Victorian era, the time of town criers. These people’s job was to call out the news starting from the town hall and moving outwards. The streets closest to the center were “streets ahead” of the outer places in being kept informed. It’s interesting to note a similar saying in Chinese.
