Japanese composer Kiyoshi Yoshida, who is known for his compositions for animation series, movies, video games and commercials, will lead his orchestra for a concert in Shenzhen

A graduate from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Yoshida will play the piano at the concert, while other musicians will play the violin, electric guitar, the taiko, the shakuhachi and the 25-string koto.

The taiko are a broad range of Japanese percussion instruments. In Japanese, the term refers to any kind of drum, but outside Japan, it is used to refer to any of the various Japanese drums called “wadaiko” and to the form of ensemble taiko drumming more specifically called “kumi-daiko.”

The koto is a traditional Japanese stringed musical instrument derived from the Chinese zheng. They have 13 strings that are usually strung over 13 movable bridges along the width of the instrument. There are also 17-string, 20-string, 21-string and 25-string variants. To play the instrument, the strings are plucked using three finger picks.

The shakuhachi is a Japanese longitudinal, end-blown bamboo-flute. It was originally introduced from China into Japan in the 7th century and underwent a resurgence in the early Edo period.

Yoshida’s compositions include the music for the film “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” and anime series “Kaiba,” “Kurozuka” and “Shigurui: Death Frenzy.” He also composed the soundtrack for the NHK special program “New Silk Road 2007” and Chinese movie “Big Fish & Begonia.”
