World’s longest sea crossing opens

THE Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), scheduled to open for traffic today, is a 55-kilometer-long bridge-island-tunnel complex across the Pearl River Estuary. It is the world’s longest sea crossing. The bridge includes a 6.7-km undersea tunnel, which is the country’s first offshore immersed tunnel and the world’s longest immersed tunnel for road traffic. It is connected to the bridge through two offshore artificial islands.

The tunnel was built to reserve room for a shipping channel for passenger liners with a displacement of 300,000 tons. As the location is close to the Hong Kong International Airport, where there is a height limitation in the airspace, an underwater tunnel must be built instead of a bridge with tall towers.

The HZMB has a dual three-lane motorway; the speed limit is 100 km per hour on the main bridge.

The bridge is expected to carry 29,100 vehicles and 126,000 passengers daily by 2030.

Zhuhai and Macao will cooperate to implement a one-off customs clearance at the two ports. The two cities will share immigration data, allowing travelers to finish the exit and entry process in one pass.

The bridge is expected to strengthen trade, financial collaboration, logistics and tourism among the three places.

It will bring residents in Hong Kong, Macao and part of Guangdong within a “one-hour living circle,” which is expected to attract more visitors to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The total cost of the HZMB reaches about 120 billion yuan (US$17.4 billion). The 29.6-km main bridge funded by the three governments cost about 48.1 billion yuan. The rest were funded by investments by the governments into their ports and link roads to the main bridge.

The cost allocation among the three governments shown as above was settled by the assessment of economic benefits they will receive after the bridge opens.

The bridge has a designed life span of 120 years.  (SD-Agencies)
