Quake hits Hualien

A 6.0-MAGNITUDE earthquake jolted the waters off Taiwan’s Hualien County at 12:34 p.m. yesterday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was monitored at about 24.01 degrees north latitude and 122.65 degrees east longitude. The quake struck at a depth of 30 km, the center said in a statement.

Ex-officials prosecuted

PROSECUTORS have filed indictments against three former senior officials in separate cases, said the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) yesterday.

Ji Xiangqi, former vice governor of Shandong Province, was accused of bribery and embezzlement, said the SPP.

The indictment said Ji had taken advantage of his posts to seek benefits for others, accepted a huge amount of money and gifts in return, and illegally possessed a large amount of public assets.

In two other cases, Liu Qiang, former vice governor of Liaoning Province, was indicted on charges of taking bribes and disrupting the election, while Li Yihuang, former vice governor of Jiangxi Province, was charged with bribery, embezzlement, misappropriation of public funds and abuse of power.

1 rescued, 10 missing

ONE person was found yesterday afternoon but 10 others remain missing after a ship carrying sand sank in the waters off Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Sunday, local authorities announced.

The accident occurred at around 3 a.m. Sunday. The maritime search and rescue center of Huludao City received a report at around 5 a.m.
