SCCSC holds 8th Global Mental Health Day

Why were students throwing water balloons at some of their teachers last week? It was part of the 8th annual Global Mental Health Day (GMHD) at Shenzhen (Nanshan) Concord College of Sino-Canada (SCCSC). Volunteer teachers participated in a fun game with students to raise money and awareness for mental health. The action of smashing water balloons also symbolized breaking the stigma of mental health and represented this year’s slogan “See the ABLE, not the label.” This activity also helped SCCSC fundraise for SpringCare.

With the theme of “Mental Resiliency,” the 8th GMHD was aimed at raising awareness about one’s abilities to bounce back from adversity and hardships. Activities, which took place during the students’ break time, included fundraising, Funducation Fair, Recharging Fair, Peer Buddies Class on Mental Health, and a movie.

The Funducation Fair had always been a student favorite. Apart from the Water Balloon Booth, there were several other interactive games and activities. “We hope that people will pay more attention to mental health and stop stigmatizing it,” said Rui Chi, director of Personal Development Center (PDC) at SCCSC. “In this way, people are more likely to take care of their mental health and seek help when encountering mental health issues.”

At the Coping Strategies Booth, students were invited to suggest possible coping solutions to given scenarios based on their daily lives. Feeling proud to present their ideas, students gained confidence to overcome these problems in real life.

One of the games, Web of Support, required participants to untie a rope together by moving their bodies. According to Noah, a senior member of the PDC, this game not only helps students learn to collaborate, but also encourages them to face failure because they do not always manage to complete it.

“The 8th GMHD is relaxing and meaningful, and it really helps us reduce stress and learn how to cope,” said Grade 11 student Zhang Guyu who took part in this event last year and was attending again as a volunteer.

“We hope students can be mentally resilient in the face of difficulties and failures,” said Rui, adding SCCSC hopes students will develop emotional self-regulation abilities and be aware of ways to get support when needed.

Rui mentioned that GMHD was established with the goal of drawing attention to mental health. “Although we change our theme every year, our aim remains the same, which is to increase students’ awareness about mental health and promote mental well-being.”
