THE city government has officially approved a plan to turn Bujiuwo, a former landfill site in Longhua District, into a Flower Valley that integrates displays, research, commerce and the promotion of floral knowledge, according to yesterday’s Shenzhen Special Zone Daily.

Meanwhile, it was unveiled at an executive meeting of the city government Friday that Shenzhen will organize a high-level flower expo next year.

“We will make further plans for displaying flowers and organizing flower exhibitions in each district,” said Liu Qing-sheng, executive vice mayor of Shenzhen.

The executive meeting focused on improving Shenzhen’s ecological environment. Chen Keshi, a political adviser, raised the suggestion of turning Bujiuwo into a Flower Valley at the meeting.

Liu replied to Chen at the meeting, saying that the city government had already accepted his suggestion.

Chen advised that Shenzhen should prepare and organize a flower expo that helps nurture new industries. The to-be-built Flower Valley will be the main venue of the planned flower expo, said Chen. Meanwhile, the other districts will also display flowers to echo the main venue.

According to Liu, the Flower Valley, covering 4.8 square meters, will be a leisure spot for the public.

Liu also responded to other suggestions made by a few CPPCC political advisers about expanding investment in the construction of cultural centers and venues.

Liu said that Shenzhen has been hoping to set up branch institutions of the Palace Museum, the National Museum and the National Art Museum of China in the city. According to the Daily, the city government has reached an agreement with the National Museum to set up a branch museum in Shenzhen.

As for science museums, Liu said that apart from the municipal-level science museum, more district-level science museums will be built in the future.
