SZU among top 50 Chinese universities
    2018-11-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN University (SZU) has quite an eye-catching presence in this year’s U.S. News ranking of the top universities in the world, ranking 46th among the top 50 universities on the Chinese mainland for the first time.

Meanwhile, SZU has also been rising rapidly in the world ranking, from 864th last year to 689th this year. It was ranked 65th among universities on the Chinese mainland last year.

U.S. News & World Report, the global authority on education rankings for more than 30 years, released the 2019 Best Global Universities rankings Tuesday. The overall rankings evaluate 1,250 renowned universities across more than 70 countries.

The major indicators for this year’s university rankings include global research reputation, regional research reputation, published papers, published books, academic conferences, standardized citation impact, total number of citations, number of high-frequency citations, percentage of high-frequency citations and international cooperation.

A total of 161 Chinese universities are on the list this year. Among them, 130 are on the mainland, seven in Hong Kong, one in Macao and 23 in Taiwan. However, compared with last year, the overall rankings of Chinese universities has declined.

Tsinghua University is ranked 50th in the world and first among mainland universities, while Peking University is ranked 68th in the world and second among mainland universities. The two universities are also the only mainland universities to make it into the top 100 in the world.

SZU has also showcased astonishing development in the field of computer science. Among this year’s top 200 universities specializing in computer science, 37 are on the Chinese mainland. SZU is ranked 23rd and 100th in China and the world, respectively, surpassing famous universities like Tongji University and Fudan University.

From 2018 to 2022, SZU will launch the second phase of its plan for developing a high-level university with the aim of entering the ranks of the world’s top 500 universities within five years. (Zhang Yu)
