    2018-11-05  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), a professional women’s ice hockey league, will hold its 2018-19 season matches in Shenzhen for the next a few months.

Established in 2007, the league comprises six teams: Calgary Inferno, Toronto Furies, Les Canadiennes de Montreal and Markham Thunder from Canada, Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays from China and Worcester Blades from the United States.

The Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays was known as Kunlun Red Star WIH during their first season, but changed its name after the second Chinese team, the Vanke Rays, was shut down and merged with Red Star. The KRS Vanke Rays plays home games at Shenzhen Universiade Sports Center.

In June 5, 2017, the CWHL was expanded to China with Kunlun Red Star WIH, a team controlled by Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League and the Vanke Rays. Each team is to play six games against its five rivals for a total of 30 games, 15 at home and 15 on the road.

At the time of the announcement, it made the league the second fully professional women’s hockey league in North America after the launch of the rival National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) in the United States in 2015.

China is developing its hockey teams in preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing.
