THE Third China Design Exhibition & Public Art Thematic Exhibition will open next month and last until March at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning beside the Civic Center in Futian District, the organizers announced at the exhibition’s academic committee’s first meeting Tuesday.

With the theme of “New Era, New Life,” the exhibition, organized by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, will display design and public art case studies made over the past three years and discuss how Chinese design and public art can propel social development and improve people’s lives.

“The exhibits will not be single products but case studies, each of which was conducted by two or three designers,” said Lyu Yuzhong, deputy director of the art department of China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

According to Hang Jian and Wang Dawei, who organized 12 curators for the exhibition, the exhibition will focus on problem-solving. In the design part, about 100-120 case studies will showcase the beauty of Chinese design, traditional craft innovations, new materials, new technologies, rural constructions, artificial intelligence and environmental protection. In the public art section, about 30-50 case studies will explore on art in city spaces, urbanization, community constructions, rural cultural rejuvenation, old village protection and rural township designs.

The 12 curators are mainly professors or department directors from top Chinese fine arts academies, domestic art museum directors and independent architects.

“We hope this exhibition will not only showcase academic achievements in China’s design development. but also influence ordinary people’s lives,” said Fan Di’an, deputy director of the exhibition’s academic committee and president of Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Launched in 2012 with the former name the China Design Exhibition, the well-established event aims to display the overall development of China’s design, build a national and comprehensive research platform and explore the value of design in serving the country’s economic, social and cultural development.
