Teen dies protecting younger cousin
    2018-11-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A BOY has been called a hero after he died saving the life of his younger cousin when they were attacked by a brown bear. Rodion Burakov, 16, was found torn apart after being killed by the bear while outside with his cousin Boris, 13, in eastern Russia.

The younger boy ran to get help, but by the time rescuers arrived at the scene it was too late.

The bear was shot dead after it was discovered guarding the boy’s dismembered remains which had been hidden under leaves and twigs.

The two boys were ambushed during a nine-mile (14.5-kilometer) walk to their village in a remote part of the Kamchatka peninsula after going to a sauna.

Boris said the bear at first attacked him but Rodion — who could have escaped with his life — distracted the beast by running past it deeper into the forest. The bear let the younger boy go free and chased Rodion, who was caught and savaged by the wild animal.

District chief Vladimir Voitsekhovsky said Boris raised the alarm at his local village fire station. Firefighters and hunters rushed to the scene but were too late to save Rodion.

Voitsekhovsky said: “They found a 3-year-old predator that had already buried the body of the older teenager. The beast was shot on the spot.”

A spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee, which is probing the incident, said: “The 13-year-old was able to escape and report the predator’s attack. The older teenager died from the claws of a bear as he protected [his cousin].”

He sustained “life-ending injuries” suffering a “scalped head wound” and “an open skull fracture.” His lower and partly upper limbs were torn off, according to the Siberian Times.

Rodion has been praised for his actions and is expected to be receive a posthumous award for exceptional bravery.

Reports say Boris was admitted to hospital and is recovering well.
