Ring busted for blackmailing online shops
    2018-11-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

LONGGANG police busted a criminal ring that allegedly blackmailed online shop owners by claiming their promotions were exaggerations or they sold low-quality products.

After shopping online, the ring members would give negative reviews on the products, spread them on social media platforms and use them as leverage for blackmail, according to Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau on Tuesday.

On Nov. 2, Bao’an police received a report from an online shop owner saying he was being blackmailed by several buyers. The police investigation showed a suspect surnamed Jiang and his accomplices had once blackmailed an online shop for 3,000 yuan (US$432) by giving negative reviews. Big data analysis indicated that the ring had victimized hundreds of online shops across the country.

Jiang registered a company in Shenzhen in April and later moved it to Hunan. He recruited so-called negative review writers by charging 1,600 to 2,800-yuan fees to tutor them on tactics for blackmailing shop owners. After buying the products from online shops, they would start writing negative reviews and blackmail the shops by making various claims against them.

Police arrested Jiang in Hunan along with the other members Nov. 6. Since April, the ring had blackmailed 200 online shops for more than 5 million yuan through 7,900 transactions. (Han Ximin)
