Cold spell

THE city’s temperature is expected to plunge to as low as 17 degrees Celsius in the latter part of the week, according to the meteorological bureau yesterday. A cold front from the north will start to affect the city Thursday with showers. Temperatures will linger around 20 degrees Celsius next week.

Driver detained

A MOTORIST has been detained for driving under the influence of alcohol and killing a tricycle rider in Longgang District in the wee hours of Sunday, according to the traffic police authority. The driver, identified by his family name Liu, knocked over the tricyle on Ainan Road after attending a party with friends at a KTV bar in Longgang Subdistrict. A breath test found that Liu’s blood alcohol content had reached 113 mg per 100 ml, surpassing the legal limit of 80 mg per 100 ml for drunk driving. The investigation continued.

Hiker falls to death

A MAN died after falling off Qiniang Mountain in Dapeng New Area on Sunday morning. The man, who wasn’t identified, fell while taking a photo from the top of Qiniang Mountain. Rescuers spent more than 10 hours searching for the male hiker after receiving a report from other hikers. The man was located at about 2:20 a.m. yesterday and confirmed dead.

No other details were available.

Smugglers seized

SEVENTEEN suspected smugglers were caught attempting to illegally bring 10 pieces of African ivory weighing 323.7 kg in total over the border, Shenzhen Customs said Thursday.

The suspects, including six Hong Kong residents, attempted to smuggle the ivory to the Chinese mainland via Hong Kong, according to the customs.

Shenzhen Customs received a tip-off about the smuggling ring after cracking a similar case in Guangdong in July 2017. A joint task force led by the General Administration of Customs was later set up to facilitate further investigation.

The team launched two raids that led to the arrest of the suspects in June and July.

It is estimated that the gang had smuggled nearly a ton of ivory, rhino horns and related products since November 2017.

China suspended the import of ivory and all ivory-related products in 2015, and ended the commercial processing and sale of ivory at the end of 2017.
