SPARK program benefits students in poor regions

利用闲暇时间网络支教 17名中学生获表彰

A total of 17 high school students were awarded for their efforts in teaching English online to junior and primary school students in impoverished regions of China under the SPARK program at an awards ceremony in Shenzhen on Saturday.

Among them, 12 are from Shenzhen, and the others are from Tianjin, Nanjing, Shijiazhuang, Xi’an and Changsha.

Two teams, comprising 21 students, were also awarded for their contribution for their team work under the program, a program under the Chinese Social Assistance Foundation,

In the past year, 1,300 students in 18 cities in China contributed 20,000 online teaching hours, either through form teaching or one-on-one teaching, benefiting 8,800 students in 50 schools in nearly 20 provinces and cities.

“The SPARK online teaching program is a mutually beneficial program through which I’ve learned a lot by teaching children in the remote villages and counties in China. In the SPARK family, we learned how to organize lessons, to communicate with students, cooperate and share. These abilities are crucially important for our future learning in high school and at universities,” Han Zikai, a student from YCIS, said at the ceremony, representing the teacher-students.

Under the program, the students set up WeChat accounts to discuss teaching methods, compile teaching materials and share ideas on organizing activities.

The program was inaugurated in November 2014, recruiting university students and high school students with good English proficiency to teach online to schools in China that don’t have sufficient English teachers, according to Nancy Liu, the teacher responsible for the program in Shenzhen.

So far, 2,000 volunteers under the program have contributed more than 60,000 hours in online teaching. More than 1,000 secondary and primary school students have received one-to-one online teaching.
