Trump pardons Thanksgiving turkey
    2018-11-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned Peas the Thanksgiving turkey Tuesday in a ceremony filled with tongue-in-cheek jokes about vote counting, recounts, subpoenas and judicial power.

“I am pleased to announce that today’s lucky bird and guest of honor is named Peas along with his alternate named Carrots,” Trump said with first lady Melania Trump at his side.

“The winner of this vote was decided by a fair and open election conducted on the White House website. This was a fair election. Unfortunately Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount and we are fighting with Carrots. We have come to a conclusion. Carrots, I’m sorry to tell you the result did not change. Too bad for Carrots.”

Trump, in his remarks, wished Americans a happy Thanksgiving season and encouraged the country to unite together — but he couldn’t resist getting in a few digs at Democrats.

The president got in a few jokes about the recent midterm election, which saw Democrats win control of the House of Representatives and the state of Florida undergo a lengthy recount process.

“Even though Peas and Carrots have received a presidential pardon, I have warned them that House Democrats are likely to issue them both subpoenas,” he said in reference to the investigations of his administration that are expected to happen next year.

“None the less in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I will be issuing both Peas and Carrots a presidential pardon. Unfortunately I can’t guarantee that they won’t be enjoined by the ninth circuit. Always happens. They are guaranteed. All joking aside, this is a time for Americans to unite together,” the president said, in reference to the liberal judges in that federal court jurisdiction.

Melania Trump, dressed in a US$9,400 Dior jacket, didn’t speak as she watched her husband carry out the annual tradition.

The first couple left for Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday afternoon to spend the Thanksgiving holiday.

After the president’s remarks, Trump officially pardoned the bird.

The first couple approached a table and watched as a handler lifted Peas onto the table.

Trump raised his hand over the bird in Charlton Heston parting-of-the-Red-Sea fashion.

“Peas, I hereby grant you a full pardon,” he said, earning laughter and applause.

Trump gave the bird a little pat, thanked the crowd and departed with his wife.

The Marine Band played “God Bless America” as he walked back toward the Oval Office.

First daughter Ivanka Trump, husband Jared Kushner and their three children — Arabella, Theodore and Joseph Kushner — joined the annual festivities, which help kick off the holiday season at the White House.

It was her first public appearance since The Washington Post revealed her use of private email to conduct White House business.

Her and the children checked out on birds before the ceremony began.

This year’s presentation marks the 71st anniversary of a tradition that has continued now through 13 successive administrations.

The tradition got a pre-game warmup Tuesday with a briefing room visit by one of the white birds.

This is the first year the presidential turkeys, furnished by the National Turkey Federation, came from a grower in South Dakota. Ruben Waldner, whose farm is near the town of Huron, brought them.

The turkey trade group said Waldner prepared them for the pressures of the White House “from an early age by acclimating the turkeys to the sounds of a crowd, bright camera lights and standing comfortably on a table.”
