Welcome to the Fringe Festival!
    2018-11-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Every year at the end of November, Shenzhen citizens are in for a treat: Artists are brought together from around the world to celebrate the joy of art creation!

Starting from Nov. 24 and running through Dec. 2, the 9th Fringe Festival will present over 119 art performances by 61 groups of artists from every corner of the globe. You can attend live concerts, avant-garde dramas, dance shows, pantomiming and children’s plays.

Since the very first Fringe Festival hit town, artists have been encouraged to perform outdoors.

Intoon Dance, a contemporary dance group based in London, will perform improvised dances both inside the theater and outdoors. During their performance, a video of another group of dancers performing in the United Kingdom will be projected on the big screen to echo the live show. Dancers will demonstrate how they’ve choreographed the movements of commuters into an impressive dance routine.

Bill Aitchison, a cross-disciplinary artist from the U.K., will bring citizens an outdoor performance called “Matchmaking Park” right at the matchmaking corner of Lianhua Hill Park. It’s interesting to watch scenarios in real life play out, as good-looking actors pose as young adults looking for a soulmate interact with unwitting parents who actually come to the venue to look for a prospective daughter- or son-in-law.

Dock In Absolute is a stellar trio from Luxembourg comprised of pianist Jean-Philippe Koch, bass player David Kintziger and drummer Nate Wong. The trio has toured the world appearing at prestigious festivals and venues. This year, they will bring the jazz-rock show “DIA” and present a Chinese song as well.

You can also hop on a bus called “Musicity Shenzhen” which will tour across all the cultural landmarks of Nanshan to appreciate music works related to the city. Dickson Dee, producer of “Musicity Shenzhen,” will lead citizens along the bus tour to seven music creation sites and guide the use of the Musicity WeChat mini program to listen to music and feel the artistic charm of the combination of music and architecture.

With this year’s slogan of “Be Fringe,” the event is organized by the Publicity Department of Nanshan District and Shenzhen Fringe Festival Committee and undertaken by the Shenzhen Fringe Art Center, Intox Design & Communication, and the Shenzhen Nanshan District Chamber of Commerce.
