Gangster sentenced to life in prison
    2018-11-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN was recently sentenced to life in prison and fined 500,000 yuan (US$72,156) for engaging in gang crimes and causing a person’s death, sznews.com reported.

According to Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court, the criminal gang was active in Shajing Subdistrict, Bao’an District, with a clear hierarchy, since 1994.

The man, surnamed Chen, and the head of the gang, surnamed Wu, bore a grudge against another man surnamed Zhong. On the evening of Aug. 15, 1998, Wu found the whereabouts of Zhong and told Chen to prepare to take revenge, the news report said.

Chen called two of his friends and arrived at Wu’s residence, while Wu prepared knives, a gun, vehicles and other tools.

At about 1 a.m. the next morning, when Zhong arrived at the downstairs of his residence, he was slashed on the legs and back by Chen and his gang. A gang member surnamed Tan shot at Zhong with the gun, the news report quoted the prosecutors as saying.

Subsequently, Chen and Tan jumped into a vehicle, which was being driven by a third gang member surnamed Huang, and fled the scene. Zhong died of hemorrhagic shock, according to the forensic experts.

According to Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court, Chen and Tan played key roles in the intentional assault and were the principal culprits in the case, while Huang was charged with being an accessory to the crime.

As a combined punishment for the several offenses, Chen was sentenced to life imprisonment and deprivation of political rights for life, and was fined 500,000 yuan, according to the court ruling.

Tan was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined 500,000 yuan, while Huang was sentenced to four years and six months in prison with a fine of 200,000 yuan. (Zhang Yu)
