STEM cells donated by a Shenzhen volunteer were handed over to French doctors at the Shenzhen Blood Center on Wednesday. They will be used to save a leukemia patient in France. Liu Zhaolong made the donation Tuesday after his stem cells were found to match those of a French national. Liu is the first person in Guangdong Province to successfully donate stem cells that matched those of a French person. A stem cell transplant is sometimes called a bone marrow transplant. By Tuesday, there were more than 98,000 stem cell donors in Guangdong and the number of stem cell donations had reached 654. Fifteen of the donors donated to people in countries and regions outside the Chinese mainland including France, South Korea, the U.S., Singapore, Australia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. (SD News) |
